Hungarian Railway Museum Budapest

If you have kids who happen to be crazy for Thomas the Engine, take them to this exciting outdoor museum and park in Budapest, the Hungarian Railway Museum.

Adults will have a great time too, believe me. I’m not really an engine or car enthusiast but still enjoyed a lot this fantastic exhibition.

The vintage locomotives stand in a neat half circle towering above you and recalling the era when this powerful steam engines were running along the railway lines of Hungary.

Easter Bunny Hunt – 21 – 22. April 2019.

A great program for the Easter weekend not just for kids. Search for Easter Bunnies carved from wood hidden at several points in the park.

A small craft workshop with Egg painting will also welcome the little ones on both days.

Activties that you can try: rinding on a horse tram, in a Tchaika car, garden railway, hand-operated cart.

Children’s Day – on the last weekend of May the park offers lots of special things to do and concerts. Entry is free for kids under the age of 14 on thease two days.

Other activities you can try include

• riding on the turntable,
• drive a steam engine,
• riding on a horse tram.

In the engine simulator you can have a virtual experience of operating the most powerful Hungarian electric engine.

You can operate the railway models housed in a building near the museum’s entrance.

If you get tired you can relax on the terrace of the Nosztalgia Café, have a cup of tea or cafe with some snacks.

The park is one of the hidden attractions of Budapest and though a bit out of the centre it’s great fun for the whole family.

Getting There:

• By the Budapest-Esztergom train service from Nyugati Train Station only on Saturdays and Sundays (the journey takes 10 minutes). Get off at Vasút Múzeum station

• by buses 30 and 30A from Keleti Train Station (M2, red metro line), and Újpest Központ (M3, blue metro line) get off at Rokolya utca stop, the museum is a two-block walk towards east, or by bus 120 form Árpád Bridge Pest end (get off at the end Reitter Ferenc utca)
• by tram No. 14 from Lehel tér (M3, blue metro line), get off at Rokolya utca stop
• by bicycle: a cycle path leads to the museum and you can park your bike in the park for free.
• by car – free parking in the museum’s closed parking lot.
