Our First-Hand Reviews of All 5 Night Cruises
Below you’ll find our detailed review of each night cruise — when to go for the best lights, where the boats leave from, and the small details that only come from being on board after dark.
1. 🥇 Budapest Night Cruise (9 & 10 PM) Review
By Hungária Koncert – Duration: 50 minutes
The cheapest way to see Budapest lit up, and the only one with a true 10 PM departure.
At €17 (€15 for students) this is the best-value night cruise on the river, and it does exactly what you want: a relaxed 50-minute loop under five of Budapest’s main bridges (Chain Brigde, Margaret Bridge, Elizabeth Bridge, Liberty Bridge, Petőfi Bridge and Rákóczi Bridge) and a glimpse of Rákóczi bridge.
An audio guide is included (according to some travellers’ they weren’t provided one) telling you what you’re looking at, while the Parliament, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge glow against the dark.
If you’d like a drink, add the optional welcome prosecco or juice.
Which departure should you pick? The 9 PM cruise runs every night and is the safe choice — the city’s illuminations are fully on the whole way. The later 10 PM departure (select nights only) is the most atmospheric in summer, when it stays light later.
In winter, stick with 9 PM (or earlier if possible): the monument floodlighting starts switching off around 10 PM, so a 10 PM start would run into darkness on the way back.
Personal Opinion
We went on the 9 PM cruise – it’s a perfect departure in mid-summer – and the city lights were already blazing along the river. It’s a must-see, and honestly one of the better night cruises out there.
Just come prepared: the upper deck gets windy, so bundle up, and grab an outer seat early for the best views and photo ops. The boat left right on time, the route delivered, and the welcome drink was a nice touch.
Heads up — the audio guide didn’t show, so you’re on your own for the city’s backstory (since we’re locals we didn’t miss it that much but tourists who want to learn a bit about the sights might appreciate guiding).
Bottom line: a gorgeous view of the city after dark, just dress warm (in spring and autmn) and don’t count on the audio guide. It’s a plus that you can choose from several options: just cruise (no welcome drink) is the cheapest, with welcome drink or cocktails if you want to splurge.
| Details | From €15 · 50 min · departs 9 PM daily (also 10 PM on select nights) · optional welcome drink (prosecco or juice) · audio guide |
| Best for | Anyone who wants the illuminated city on a budget — and the only true late 10 PM option on the river. |
| Good to know | This is a sightseeing cruise, not a party or dinner boat — no music, no meal, just the view. Dog friendly 🐕. |
| What you see | All six main bridges, the Parliament, Buda Castle and the Citadel, lit up against the night sky. |
| Local tip | In summer take the 10 PM for full darkness and full illumination; in winter the 9 PM is safer, as the lights start going off around 10. |
2. ⭐ Historical Cruise with Welcome Drink Review
Aboard a historical paddle steamer – Duration: 1 hour
The highest-rated night cruise on the river: 4.7★ from over 8,000 guests.
This one runs on a faithfully recreated, charming 19th-century paddle steamer — the Kisfaludy or the Hableány — and the difference shows: it’s smaller and less crowded than the big commercial boats, which makes it a favourite for photos.
You get a welcome drink on arrival and an audio guide you scan on your phone, available in 30 languages.
With a 4.7-star rating from more than 8,000 reviews, it’s the most consistently loved night cruise in Budapest.
Personal Opinion
We really loved this cruise. We picked the Kisfaludy paddle steamer because we knew it was smaller, authentic, and never felt crowded compared to other cruise ships.
I could wander the deck and take photos from every angle. They handed us a glass of fizz as a welcome drink, and we spent a leisurely hour taking in Budapest’s most beautiful sights along the Danube.
The audio guide was one of the best I’ve ever used — just scan the code (earbuds optional) — and it will tell so much about the city’s history in a way that is informative and entertaining.
The service was lovely, the cappuccino delicious. On windy/colder days they even provide blankets. My only gripe? The prosecco could use an upgrade — but honestly, I wasn’t there for the booze and they serve the same lower-shelf bubbly on almost all the other cruises.
I’d time it for the evening if I were you. We went to catch the sunset and the city lights against the dark sky, and it did not disappoint. Budapest at night from the river is absolutely spectacular — a total must – even for locals. Highly recommend!
| Details | From €26 · 1 hour · departs 10 PM · welcome drink included · audio guide (30 languages) · rating 4.7★ (8,227) |
| Best for | Travellers who want the best-reviewed, most atmospheric boat — and photographers who prefer a smaller vessel. |
| Good to know | The paddle steamers are recreations, not originals, but the vintage feel is genuine. Board early — seating is first-come. |
| What you see | The illuminated Parliament, Buda Castle and the bridges, from a smaller boat with plenty of room to move for photos. |
| Local tip | The smaller deck means fewer people between you and the railing — the best spot for a clean shot of the Parliament. |
3. 🥂 By Night Sightseeing with Welcome Drink Review
By Mahart Cruises – Duration: 50 minutes
The reliable crowd-pleaser, backed by over 20,000 reviews.
If you want a safe but not so comfortable bet, this is it: a basic boat with enough space, a glass of Törley prosecco included, departing from the city centre. With more than 20,000 reviews at 4.4 stars, it’s one of the most booked night cruises in Budapest for a reason — it consistently delivers the illuminated-city experience without any fuss. The Parliament comes into view in the first 15 minutes, so don’t settle in too deep.
Personal Opinion
We went on the 8.20 PM tour in mid-July because we wanted to see and photo the sunset view as well as the lit-up city.
The timing was ideal beacuse we managed to catch both and took some really awesome photos. Despite a mid-week day the queue was already long at the boarding place so make sure you get there in time if you want to grab a good seat.
The boat itself is very basic with two rows of wooden benches on the upper deck. The seat bordered on uncomfortable at first but with a glass of drink in hand and the golden-hour city view unfolding in front of me had quickly made me forget about hte slight nuisance.
💡 Locals’ TIP: The downstairs room is air-conditioned and more peaceful (most passengers want to be on the upper deck) and if you sit in the front the full-width panorama windows let you enjoy the vista more fully.
All in all, it’s a good low-budget option. The length of the trip is just right if you want to see everything notable at affordable cost but didn’t want to spend hours on the water but I certainly wouldn’t go on a repeat trip.
| Details | From €21 · 50 min · departs 10 PM · Törley prosecco included · audio guide · rating 4.4★ (20,713) |
| Best for | First-timers who want a proven, no-surprises cruise with a drink included and thousands of reviews behind it. |
| Good to know | It’s a larger boat, so it can be busier than the paddle steamer — arrive early for a deck seat. Seats are first-come. |
| What you see | The Parliament (visible in the first 15 minutes), Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and the Citadel, all lit up. |
| Local tip | Head straight to the open deck when you board — the glass reflects the cabin lights and spoils night photos. |
4. 🌉 Night Lights Cruise Review
By Purpleliner – Duration: 60 minutes
A full hour on the water, past all six bridges, at a great price.
Departing from Batthyány tér on the Buda side, this 60-minute cruise gives you the longest time on the water at a great budget price, and passes under all six of Budapest’s main bridges.
There’s an audio guide and a bar on board, and the extra time compared to the 50-minute boats means a more unhurried look at the illuminated riverfront. You can choose from several late evening – night time departures in summer.
Personal Opinion
Unlike most other cruise boats this one departs from the Buda side, right across the Parliament Building. We arrived early to take pictures of the building at sunset, and we were in time to catch some picturesque moments.
The 8:30 evening slot was ideal – starting in fading light and ending after dark, when the bridges, historic buildings, and landmarks glow beautifully against the water.
The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, a perfect way to end the day. There’s an audio guide that you can downlaod to your phone, but as locals we didn’t feel the need to us eit.
Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, we highly recommend this one. The price is affordable if you just want the river excursion. But you can get drinks from the bar on the boat.
| Details | From €18 · 60 min · departs 10 PM · audio guide · bar on board · rating 4.3★ (23,630) |
| Best for | Those who want a full hour on the river and to pass under all six bridges, without paying a premium. |
| Good to know | Departs from Batthyány tér (Buda side, Dock 1/B) — a little away from the main Pest-side cluster, so check the map before you go. |
| What you see | All six main bridges, plus the Parliament, Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church from the water. |
| Local tip | The audio guide is a downloadable app — download it and bring your own earphones before you board, there’s no loudspeaker. |
5. 🍾 Premium Cruise with Tokaj Frizzante Review
By Duna Cruises – Duration: 1 hour
The upmarket pick, with premium Hungarian sparkling wine and a panorama deck.
If you’d like to make the evening feel special without going for a full dinner cruise, this is the one. It’s an elegant boat with a panorama deck and an air-conditioned interior, and you’re welcomed with a glass of premium Tokaj Frizzante (or orange juice). It departs at 9:30 PM, timed so you catch the last of the light and then the full illumination as the city glows.
Personal Opinion
This option offers a VIP experience without the crowds. Compared to the Mahart-operated tour this was a 5-star cruise at still a moderate price.
The boat is new, clean, and in great condition, with plenty of comfortable, cushinoed seating both indoors and out — including lovely lounge-style seats up top with cushions.
The complimentary welcome drink (a better quality Hungarian sparkling or orange juice for the kids) was a delicious touch, and the drink service throughout was excellent.
The easy-to-access audio guide gives a short but interesting commentary on the main landmarks, and the friendly, helpful staff speak great English.
As a local, I was impressed by the level of service. In just one hour you’ll see so much, with plenty of time to admire the views and take great photos. It’s a must-do in Budapest, especially at sunset or after dark, when the ambience is completely different.
One tip: the Parliament lights switch off at 11pm in summer, so plan ahead. Departure was on time, and it’s fantastic value for money. Highly recommend!
| Details | From €36 · 1 hour · departs 9:30 PM · Tokaj Frizzante welcome drink · audio guide (30 languages) · rating 4.7★ (2,985) |
| Best for | Couples and anyone wanting an elegant, quiet evening on the water — a step up from the standard boats. |
| Good to know | Departs from Dock 10 near Elizabeth Bridge (Pest side). Around sunset the route is adjusted to pass the Parliament at its best light. |
| What you see | The illuminated riverfront from a premium boat, with the Parliament timed for the best light on the route. |
| Local tip | One reviewer notes the Parliament lights switch off around 11 PM in summer — the 9:30 PM start means you’ll catch them at their best. |
6 Local Tips for a Budapest Night Cruise
Small things that make the difference between a good night cruise and a magical one — from our own evenings on the Danube.
FAQ
What time is best for a Budapest night cruise?
The best time is after full darkness, when the city’s illuminations are at their brightest — typically a departure between 9 PM and 10 PM. In summer it stays light later, so a 10 PM cruise is ideal; in winter, a 9 PM departure is safer because the monument floodlighting starts switching off around 10 PM.
How much does a Budapest night cruise cost?
Budapest night cruises cost between €17 and €36 per person in 2026. The cheapest sightseeing cruises with an audio guide start at €17, mid-range boats with a welcome drink included run €18–26, and premium cruises with sparkling wine cost around €36. All are far cheaper than dinner cruises, which start at €45.
When do the lights go off in Budapest?
The city’s decorative floodlighting switches off at around 11 PM in summer and 10 PM in winter. This is the single most important thing to plan around on a night cruise — book a departure early enough that the full 50–60 minute loop finishes before the lights go off, or you’ll see dark buildings on the way back.
How long is a Budapest night cruise?
Most Budapest night cruises last 50 to 60 minutes. This is enough time for a full loop past the Parliament, Buda Castle and all the main bridges, and back. Night cruises are shorter than dinner cruises (1.5–2.5 hours) because they focus on the views rather than a meal or a show.
Is a night cruise better than a dinner cruise?
It depends on what you want. A night cruise is cheaper (from €17), shorter and purely about the illuminated city — ideal if you’ve already had dinner or want a quick, magical experience. A dinner cruise costs more (from €45) and takes 1.5–2.5 hours, but includes a meal and often live music. If the lights are your priority, a night cruise gives you the same views for a fraction of the price.
Which side of the boat is best on a night cruise?
Both sides get a good view, because night cruises run a loop and the boat turns around, so each side faces the Parliament at some point. For photos, head to the open deck rather than staying behind glass, and if you can, position yourself on the Pest side first for the Parliament, which is usually the highlight.
Do Budapest night cruises include drinks?
Some do, some don’t. The budget cruise (from €17) offers an optional welcome drink, while the mid-range and premium cruises include a welcome drink — a Törley prosecco or a premium Tokaj sparkling wine — in the ticket price. All boats have a bar on board where you can buy more. If you want unlimited drinks or a party atmosphere, that’s a different type of cruise.
Do I need to book a night cruise in advance?
Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially in summer and on weekends. The most popular boats sell out, and seating is first-come once on board, so booking online secures your spot and lets you arrive early for the best seats. Most cruises offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so there’s little risk in booking early.
Our Verdict: Which Night Cruise Should You Book?
If we had to pick just one, it would be the Budapest Night Cruise from Hungária Koncert (from €17, €15 for students). It’s the cheapest option, it’s the only one with a true 10 PM departure for full darkness in summer, and at 50 minutes it does everything a night cruise should — the illuminated city, all six bridges, an audio guide — without paying for extras you don’t need.
That said, the right cruise depends on your evening. If reviews and atmosphere matter most, the Historical Cruise (from €26) is the highest-rated on the river at 4.7★, on a charming smaller paddle steamer that’s a dream for photos.
For a proven, no-surprises choice with a drink included, the By Night Sightseeing (from €21) has over 20,000 reviews behind it.
Want a full hour on the water? The Night Lights Cruise (from €18) passes under all six bridges. And to make the evening feel special without a full dinner, the Premium Tokaj cruise (from €36) adds sparkling wine and an elegant boat.
Whichever you choose, the golden rule is the same: go after dark, but not too late — the city’s lights start switching off around 11 PM in summer and 10 PM in winter. Time it right, and Budapest from the water at night is one of the most beautiful sights in Europe.
